Is there a certain dog food you should feed hunting dogs? Hunting birds is a exercise and you want to keep them in tip top shape. Just wondering is there a certain brand that is the best.

There are many good brands of food. During periods of heavy training and hunting season we feed a hi performance food with higher fat and protein. During off periods, like now, we feed the same name brand but in a maintainance formula with less fat and protein.

The brand of food you choose is a personal preference and naming one brand over another in these forums usually just leads to a war of words.

I would agree that naming a brand would spark a debate as there are many good foods. Research a bit on how to read an ingredients list and I think you discover the answer yourself as to what brand(s) you may want to choose. If  was to paint with broad strokes, I would avoid anything that is sold from a grocery store or a Walmart. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I have not seen one.

I feed Purina Pro Plan 30/20.  What you feed should be based on your dogs activity level.  If you have an active dog that is hunting and/or training a lot you should feed a good performance food.  As your dogs activity goes down so will it's need for energy.

The best advice on dog food is to find something your dog does well on and feed it.

Be careful of websites that rank dog food based on ingredients.  They make several assumptions based on personal bias and/or bad info.
