I've been offered an eight month old black lab and I'm in desperate need of a good bird dog. Is she to old to star training to hunt, or will this work out ok?

Desperate is never a good frame of mind to be in when you want something. 8 months is still very young and could certainly be trained.  But don't expect to have a working retriever this season. Good luck and slow down.  :)

I got her and she's a good dog the people I got from kept her  in a kennel all the  time so she's not leash trained or anything..... I definitely have my work cut out for me though... Is there a book I could reference that will be helpful in this adventure you could suggest ? I imagine she has at least two years before she's ready to go out..

Id say Water dog by Richard wolters is a good read but I think a better bet is a complete program like Evan Graham's smart work or something along those lines check out retriever training forums if you got a minute and see what those guys are recommending.

Glad you have the pup.  there are so many books out there.  Google dog training and read some of the techniques used.  Find one that you think best fits YOUR patience and personality.  You, as the trainer, have as much to learn as the pup.  together, you both can learn and become great hunting partners.  AND, no reason why she can't be a fun and capable retriever for you next year.

Good Luck and have fun!

I am fairly new here on DU as well and can say the Wolters book is a definite book to get but I also used google and youtube. I am in the same boat I wanted to train my own dog. I have zero experience in training dogs but have taken wolters and several other trainers training techniques and ideas. Just don't rush its a easy way to create bad habits
