Mepkin Abbey OKs easement

Mepkin Abbey's monks protected their 3,128-acre monastery from future development this week, formally placing a conservation easement on the land with Ducks Unlimited.

The monks pledged two years ago to preserve their monastery overlooking the Cooper River, a move that helped state and federal officials acquire the nearby 10,697-acre Bonneau Ferry tract.

Since then, the monastery's leaders and Ducks Unlimited have been crafting an easement that protects the land and gives the monks flexibility to continue their egg farm. Both organizations signed the easement this week...
