MEMPHIS, Tenn. – March 13, 2014 – Ducks Unlimited announced today the winners of the 2014 Wetland Conservation Achievement Awards yesterday during the 79th North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference held in Denver. This year’s recipient in the Federal Employee category is Kurt Forman of South Dakota.

Forman is the South Dakota State Coordinator for the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program. Forman was recognized for his many contributions to wetlands and waterfowl conservation in South Dakota. Under his leadership 7,692 acres of South Dakota wetlands have been restored or established, with 32 percent in perpetual conservation easements; 27,512 acres have been planted in native grass, with 46 percent in easements; and 463,901 acres of grazing systems have been put in place, with 26 percent in easements. Kurt has secured more than 18 million dollars in North American Wetland Conservation Act grants and critical matching grants.

“Kurt has displayed an incredible talent for bringing people to the table and working through tough issues,” said DU Chief Conservation Officer Paul Schmidt. “He is actively engaged in discussions to maximize the wildlife benefits of farm conservation programs while supporting opportunities for producers to stay profitable. And through his strong relationships with non-governmental organizations, states, tribes, and other federal agencies Kurt has helped create a lasting legacy of wetland and grassland protection.”

Ducks Unlimited’s Wetland Conservation Achievement Awards are presented annually in six categories to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the conservation and restoration of North America’s wetlands and waterfowl.
