On Feb. 17, during Ducks Unlimited’s annual state convention in Springfield, Ducks Unlimited (DU) volunteer Terry Fuchs
was honored as Illinois Volunteer Conservationist of the Year.
Each year the award is presented by the DU Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Office to recognize and show appreciation for exceptional conservation and fundraising efforts on the part of an Illinois DU volunteer.
Fuchs, of Metamora, Ill., is a lifelong DU member and a Life Sponsor, having donated more than $10,000 to DU’s conservation work. In 1998, DU initiated a new conservation program in Illinois with an ambitious goal of protecting and restoring 30,000 acres of waterfowl habitat. A volunteer leader was needed who “knew the ropes” and who could step in to lend a helping hand to get the program rolling. Fuchs answered the call and became chairman of DU’s Conservation Committee in Illinois.
As a DU advocate on the Illinois duck stamp committee, Fuchs has helped direct more than $3 million in state duck stamp revenue toward high-priority projects across Illinois and in Canada. He has played a prominent role in supporting a major donor campaign to raise funds for Illinois habitat projects through the Illinois PRIDE program. His local political contacts also have been an asset to DU’s public policy program.
“Terry Fuchs and volunteers like him are critical to the success of Ducks Unlimited,” said Bob Hoffman, director of DU’s Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Office. “Terry has been instrumental in the long-term growth and success of our volunteer fund-raising efforts in Illinois. His longtime relationship with DU has been a great asset in Illinois and he continues to prove himself a strong leader in the DU volunteer family. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the honor of being Volunteer Conservationist of the Year.”
Fuchs’ newest endeavor is helping to lead DU’s Wetlands for Tomorrow campaign, which will further DU conservation efforts in Illinois and across North America.

With more than a million supporters, Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest and most effective wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, with almost 12 million acres conserved. The United States has lost more than half of its original wetlands—nature’s most productive ecosystem—and continues to lose more than 80,000 acres each year.
