MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Nov. 26, 2013 – The Ducks Unlimited family is sad to acknowledge the death of champion caller and call maker Eli Haydel.
"Eli Haydel was an innovative call maker, positive representative of the waterfowling community, and a strong Ducks Unlimited supporter," says DU CEO Dale Hall. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Haydel family."
A DU sponsor for nearly three decades, Haydel was born in Raceland, La., where he grew up waterfowl hunting. Living in the heart of Cajun country, music had a tremendous effect on the young Haydel, and he started playing the clarinet and saxophone at age 14. Although he never received formal training, Haydel played with several bands in New Orleans throughout his life.
After serving in the Air Force, Haydel made his home in Bossier City, La., where he combined his love of music and waterfowl hunting in his business. He noticed that many of the duck calls of that era would not "blow wet," so Haydel designed a call from nonporous material that would work in all weather conditions. Haydel's design revolutionized the industry, and he began making his calls full time in 1985.
Highly respected in the hunting community, Haydel was inducted into the Ark-La-Tex Museum of Champions, Louisiana Sportsman's Hall of Fame, and Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame.
Haydel, a recipient of the prestigious DU Silver Teal Award in recognition of his longtime support of DU's continental conservation programs, will be missed by friends, family, and duck hunters across the country. Haydel’s sons, Kelly and Rod continue to produce Haydel's popular line of game calls and other hunting products.
