Thousands attend first ever DU concert
The stage was set. The weather was great. The fans came in droves. The Duck Jam was a hit!
More than 3,000 people attended the Budweiser Duck Jam in Aggieland, a concert to benefit Ducks Unlimited held at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheatre in College Station, Texas on March 25. Five Texas-based bands performed during a 7-hour period, delighting the crowd.
“A great success,” said DU’s Coordinator of University Programs Jason McKey and Duck Jam event director. “It was everything we knew it could be. The music was wonderful, and the fans were super. With the help of Budweiser and other event sponsors, we were able to hold a top-notch event I know people will want to come back and see again next year.”
The Aggieland Chapter of Ducks Unlimited hosted the Duck Jam. This group of dedicated collegiate volunteers recently received DU’s No. 1 University Chapter award for the second year in a row.
The Granger Smith band, a local College Station favorite, opened the show in pure Texas country style. Austin-based Micky & The Motorcars followed with its special brand of country rock.
Reckless Kelly then surprised the crowd with its entrance . . . by boat. A mote surrounds the stage at Wolf Pen Creek, and band members thought arriving in a boat was appropriate given it was a DU event. The boat was appropriately decorated in DU and Reckless Kelly stickers.
As the sun set, the concert peaked as the two headliners followed each other on stage. First, Roger Creager, a Texas A&M alumnus who loves to play College Station in front of some of his most dedicated fans, treated the crowd with his unique style.
Then Texas music star and avid outdoorsman Kevin Fowler wrapped up the show with his own brand of Texas country music.
Fowler says he loved playing in the first Duck Jam.
"As an entertainer, I’m constantly asked to play benefit shows or fundraisers for different causes,” he said. “But, this time it was very different. Finally, a cause that I truly believed in. As a waterfowl hunter and Ducks Unlimited member, I know the incredible work that DU does. I feel very honored to have been chosen to play at the Duck Jam. Keep up the great work, Ducks Unlimited! I appreciate everything you do."
Plans for next year’s event, as well as concerts in other areas, are already underway.
