Dogs Get Big Air in Hot Springs this Weekend at the Ducks Unlimited Big Air National Championship

MEMPHIS, Tenn, June 7, 2005 - This weekend, the high-flying excitement of the Ducks Unlimited Big Air Competition will culminate in Hot Springs, Arkansas when the nation’s top twelve Big Air dogs compete for the national championship, June 11.  It’s all part of a Friday and Saturday of canine fun at the Mack’s Super Retriever Series Crown Championship.

The events begin Friday, June 10 on the infield of Oaklawn Park, 2705 Central Avenue, in Hot Springs.

The retriever trials begin Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.  Over the two-day period, the teams of twelve hunting dogs and their handlers is cut to two with the top two teams competing for the Crown Championship at 4:00 p.m, Saturday, June 11.  An awards ceremony will immediately follow the final competition.  Admission is free and the whole family is encouraged to attend – especially those who love dogs.

Mike Jackson’s Black Lab, Little Morgan, gets big air at a Ducks Unlimited qualifying competition. Little Morgan holds the world record jump with a leap of 26’-6”.
“But you don’t have to be a dog lover to enjoy the Ducks Unlimited Big Air Competition and the retriever trials,” says Gregg Patterson, Director of Communications for Ducks Unlimited.  “Besides the sheer canine power and unbelievable leaps, you can’t help but love seeing people and their dogs having this much fun together.”

The Ducks Unlimited Big Air competition attracts all types of dog breeds. Competing dogs run down a 40-ft. dock and try to catch “Big Air” after handlers toss a dummy into the water. The farthest jump, measured by laser sightings, determines the winner. The top dogs in the competition will jump more than 20 feet!

With more than a million supporters, Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization.  The United States alone has lost more than half of its original wetlands – nature’s most productive ecosystems – and continues to lose more than 100,000 wetland acres each year.
