Ducks Unlimited has acquired another fantastic property in Nebraska’s important Rainwater Basin. The 320-acre Carey property is located adjacent to the 320-acre Hansen Waterfowl Production Area in eastern Clay County. The acquisition of this property provides a tremendous opportunity to restore a significant block of waterfowl habitat. The tract was acquired as part of DU’s Revolving Habitat Program. DU major donor funds were used to match funds from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, providing the $550,000 needed to complete this purchase in October 2008. Once fully restored, the tract will complement the adjacent Waterfowl Production Area, providing a contiguous block of 640 acres of important waterfowl habitat. The restored wetlands will provide critically important waterfowl habitat during spring migration, benefitting mallards, northern pintails, green-winged teal, white-fronted geese and many other waterfowl species. Restoration work will include plugging drain ditches and removing a one-mile long levee that dissects the large wetland on the tract.
