Ducks Unlimited designed and oversaw the installation of a new water control structure at the Mays Point pool at Montezuma Wildlife Refuge, in central New York. This pool is managed for shore birds during their fall migration. Manipulation of the water level begins in late July or early August. A gradual release of water from the pool expose mud flats that are rich with the micro-invertebrates these birds depend upon as a food source. This high protein food provides the many species of shore birds that migrate through central New York with the energy they need to migrate to their wintering grounds in Mexico and South America. The maintenance road on the berm was also regarded as a part of the project.
