Ducks Unlimited recently completed a large wetland restoration project on the Prairie Dog Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) in Nebraska's Rainwater Basin. As part of this project, DU fully restored almost 500 acres of seasonal wetland
habitat on this WPA.
Restoration activities included filling old tail-water recovery pits on private land. This allows more runoff to reach the expansive wetlands on Prairie Dog WPA, providing important spring migration habitat for waterfowl that stop in
Nebraska's Rainwater Basin.
Partners involved in this project include the Nebraska Environmental Trust, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Rainwater Basin Joint Venture, and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The Prairie Dog WPA project will provide important
migration habitat for mallards, pintails, blue-winged teal, white-fronted geese, and many other
waterfowl species. This project will also provide ideal migration habitat for the endangered whooping crane.
