In June 2012, Ducks Unlimited acquired a 120-acre property adjacent to Ritterbush Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) in Franklin County. This parcel contains a large portion of a wetland that also lies on Ritterbush WPA. DU biologists are developing a habitat restoration plan for the site that will be implemented over the next several years. Ultimately, DU’s goal is to transfer ownership of the property to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an important round-out to Ritterbush WPA, providing not only important habitat to waterfowl and other wildlife, but also public recreation opportunities, including hunting. This tract is located in the southwest portion of the Rainwater Basin and will benefit many species, including the endangered whooping crane.
