In April 2009 Ducks Unlimited began an extensive wetland restoration project on the Macon Lakes Waterfowl Production Area in Franklin County. This extensive wetland complex is owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and open for many public uses, including waterfowl hunting. The wetland complex has become choked with invasive trees. Drainage features on the site have reduced the amount of water available for wetland habitat. Restoration activities include the removal of invasive trees and restoration of hydrology. Once restored, the $500,000 project will provide several hundred acres of prime waterfowl habitat, benefiting thousands of waterfowl that have traditionally used the area. Project partners assisting DU in this effort include the Friends of the Rainwater Basin, Nebraska Environmental Trust, North American Wetlands Conservation Council, Rainwater Basin Joint Venture, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
