CHARLESTON, Miss. – June 21, 2013 – Ronal Roberson, of Charleston, Miss., was elected to Ducks Unlimited Inc.'s national board of directors during the organization's annual convention held recently in Portland, Ore.
"The leadership of our board of directors ensures we are fulfilling our mission to conserve, restore and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl," said DU CEO Dale Hall. "Our board members are not paid for their work; rather they volunteer their time and resources because they feel so strongly about conservation. I welcome each new member and look forward to working with them in the years to come."
Tallahatchie County native Ronal Roberson's deep devotion to waterfowl began almost before he can recall.
"I grew up in the best place in the world if you wanted to be a waterfowl hunter," Roberson said. "I've been going to a duck blind for more than 50 years. It's part of my heritage."
Roberson found an outlet for his waterfowling passion and a way to ensure its continued existence by supporting and volunteering with Ducks Unlimited. He believes that sharing one's time is the best way to impress upon people that you're truly committed to a cause. In the mid 1970's, he began volunteering with DU in the way many do, as a local committee member, and he has remained actively involved for more than 40 years. Ronal has a particular zeal for efforts involving youth in the outdoors.
During his tenure as Mississippi DU State Chairman, he would contact the state chairmen and regional directors in a seven-state area and offer them hunts in Mississippi. For the hunts, Ronal provided lodging, food and hunting guides and locations for a parent and child.
In more recent years, Ronal has been instrumental in the development of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks' Youth Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Camp. He offered to host the first event in 2010 at his lodge in Tippo, Mississippi, and ensured that the camp had a home going forward as well. He continues to guide some of the participants in a hunt on his lands during the camp each year.
