Last November, Ducks Unlimited purchased 96 acres on Thoen Lake and Lake Harold in central Minnesota's Meeker County. DU purchased the land through a 2010 Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Fund grant as recommended
by the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council. The land will be transferred to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and managed as the Thoen Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA).
Thoen Lake and Lake Harold are important to migrating waterfowl. They're also vulnerable to development due to their close proximity to the Twin Cities metro area. This acquisition, which includes 1.25 miles of shoreline on these two shallow lakes, is the first step in the Minnesota
DNR's plan to create a much larger WMA that will eventually protect the shorelines of both lakes. In addition, this acquisition will allow for active water-level management in the lakes, improving wetland habitat for migrating and breeding waterfowl. The property also includes rolling prairie grasslands (36 acres), oak savanna woodlands (55 acres), and one small wetland.
