Malan Waterfowl Production Area was acquired and established in 2006 as Michigan's fourth WPA. In 2007, Ducks Unlimited and its partners completed restoration on 98 acres of emergent, scrub/shrub and forested wetlands and native warm-season grasslands.

Malan WPA provides important nesting and migration habitat for mallards, wood ducks and blue-winged teal, as well as other migratory bird and wildlife species. The diversity of nesting and brood-rearing habitat provides for excellent waterfowl production.

Hunters, birdwatchers and hikers are welcome to enjoy Malan; it is one of the most utilized public properties in the area. With heavily agricultural surroundings, Malan WPA provides an outpost near Waterloo State Recreation Area, another hotspot for migratory birds.

This project was funded in part by a North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant.

Partners: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Pheasants Forever, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Jackson County Community Foundation, Washtenaw Land Trust and Ducks Unlimited
