CropLife America and DU are partnering on a national level in a Wildlife Conservation-Technology Initiative. Established in 1933, CropLife America represents the developers, manufacturers, formulators and distributors of plant science solutions for agriculture and pest management in the United States. The goal of this five-year initiative is to expand the use of plant science technology in the restoration and management of habitat for the benefit of waterfowl and other wildlife. By contributing herbicides, fungicides and technical assistance, the member companies of CropLife America are working with DU to manage invasive weeds and enhance natural habitat in key waterfowl landscapes. In 2005 and 2006, Monsanto Company, a CropLife America member, donated 1,045 gallons of AquaMaster herbicide and 250 gallons of Roundup Pro herbicide valued at more than $58,000 to DU to restore Michigan coastal wetlands through the control of Phragmites and to establish waterfowl nesting grasses.
In 2006, DU provided the AquaMaster herbicide needed by the Michigan DNR to control phragmites and restore native plant communities in 288 acres of coastal wetlands at Nayanquing Point, St. Clair Flats, and Point Mouillee State Wildlife Areas. In 2005, DU donated herbicide to the DNR to control phragmites in another 210 acres at St. Clair Flats, bringing the total wetland acreage improved on DNR land to nearly 500 over two years. DU will continue this partnership with the DNR in 2007.
