ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Dec. 13, 2011—Ducks Unlimited released a letter recently urging Congress—particularly members of the Great Lakes states' delegations—to take immediate action to prevent invasive Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. The letter urged Congress to support Senator Debbie Stabenow's "Stop Asian Carp" amendment to H.R. 2354, the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2012.

"The negative impact invasive Asian carp would have on the Great Lakes and habitat for waterfowl is staggering," said Gildo Tori, director of public policy for DU's Great Lakes and Atlantic region. "Senator Stabenow's amendment rightly urges the Army Corps of Engineers to pick up the pace on an ongoing study. This threat needed to be addressed yesterday, to be frank." 

The study as scheduled will not be complete until 2015. 

The Great Lakes represent 21 percent of the world's fresh water and supply drinking water to millions of people, in addition to being important to millions of waterfowl in North America.
