Massachusetts: Lackey Pond

The Lackey Pond project restored and enhanced 150 acres of freshwater emergent marsh, for which Ducks Unlimited provided engineering design, contractor oversight and funding support. DU and its partners replaced a deteriorated, non-functioning dam with a new concrete dam with water-control structure to permit water-level management and optimize wetland habitat.

Lackey Pond is important for local breeding waterfowl, including American black ducks, wood ducks and mallards. It's also regionally important for migratory waterfowl, including the species above, as well as Canada geese, ring-necked ducks and green-winged teal.

Water quality is among the greatest benefits of the Lackey Pond restoration. Recreational opportunities such as hunting, birding, fishing, canoeing and kayaking were also impacted significantly by this project.

Partners: Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Ocean State Power, Uxbridge Foundation, Blackstone River Watershed Association, Concerned Citizens for Lackey Pond and Ducks Unlimited
