Located in southwest Indiana in the floodplain of the Ohio River, the Weyerbacher wetland restoration has become the latest addition to the Hovey Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area. DU designed and delivered this 35-acre moist soil managed wetland. A coalition of partners contributed to this project and includes the Indiana DNR, Southwest Indiana Four Rivers Protect, Cinergy Corp., Indianapolis Power and Light, USDA-NRCS and the Izaak Walton League. This project involved building a low-level dike and installing a water control structure to impound and manage water levels as needed. In addition, a well was drilled and a pump installed to provide a reliable water source. This project will provide dependable and manageable water in an impoundment that will be flooded during fall and winter to provide critical migration and wintering habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds and other wetland wildlife.
