On November 8 th , a host of conservation partners joined together at the Triple H Gun Club to celebrate the Indiana Department of Natural Resource’s (IDNR) purchase of 8,000 acres commonly known as Goose Pond. On hand to convey the importance wetland conservation and public benefits stemming from this joint effort was Gov. Mitch Daniels, John Tomke (Ducks Unlimited), Kyle Hupfer, (IDNR), Robyn Thorson (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service) and Mary McConnell (The Nature Conservancy). Located in Greene County, Goose Pond is one of Indiana's largest and most valuable wetland and waterfowl resources. As the state’s newest publicly owned and managed wildlife area, Hoosiers will now benefit from the many outdoor recreational opportunities to be discovered at Goose Pond. A variety of State and Federal agencies, conservation organizations and private individuals collaboratively made this historic acquisition possible. Major financial contributors include IDNR-Division of Fish and Wildlife, Indiana Heritage Trust, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA), The Nature Conservancy and Ducks Unlimited. In addition to recent restoration work completed by Ducks Unlimited at Goose Pond, the organization provided $1,114,000 to IDNR for this acquisition. This includes a $250,000 cash contribution by Ducks Unlimited along with $864,000 of NAWCA funds awarded to DU for this purpose. NAWCA is an important source of funding for DU conservation programs across the country and helps focus efforts to areas like Goose Pond that are of great importance to waterfowl and other migratory birds.
