DU and Cinergy Corp. have had a long-standing agreement to reforest seasonally flooded bottomlands in southern Indiana. This agreement was recently modified to shift the focus to acquisition of cleared bottomlands, planting trees on those acquired lands, and then selling them on to the U.S. Fish and wildlife Service to become part of the Patoka River NWR. The first property bought and reforested under the revised agreement is the 60-acre Hughes Tract in June 2005. Cinergy will retain a carbon easement. Proceeds from the sale will help acquire and reforest additional tracts for waterfowl habitat under this program.
