January Waterfowl Behavior
Ducks, particularly
mallards, will be using flooded timber more in January due to biological demands. They often use flooded forests and swamps to avoid pressure, forage on invertebrates (bugs) to gain needed proteins and calcium for the upcoming breeding season and they use these secluded areas during very cold temperatures to help conserve body temperatures.
The second segment of the 2010-2011 duck season ends at sunset Monday, with the third and final segment opening Saturday, Jan. 22 and running through Sunday, Jan. 30.
