Ducks Unlimited needs you in the Nanticoke. The Nanticoke River is a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. Its watershed drains over 800 square miles in Maryland and Delaware and is widely recognized for its unique biological communities. In 2009, a Nanticoke River Watershed Restoration Plan was developed to improve water quality and wildlife habitat in the Nanticoke River Watershed.
Key benefits of the plan's restoration strategies include: Reduced flooding, improved water quality, wildlife habitat, and improved aesthetics.
A variety of programs are now available to private landowners, particularly agricultural producers. These programs offer financial incentives and technical assistance for restoring marginally productive land and implementing improved land use practices.
Eligible conservation practices include:
• Reforestation
• Wetland or channel restoration
• Grass buffer planting
• Invasive species control
• Wildlife habitat creation
Private landowners can receive 75-100 percent cost share for project implementation as well monthly payments and other incentives while maintaining private property rights and traditional uses. The Nanticoke River Watershed Restoration Group provides technical assistance to determine the most appropriate conservation practices for each property at no cost to the landowner. With the support of landowners like you, the integrity of the Nanticoke River Watershed can be conserved for future generations.
