As the state of Delaware continues to do battle with the invasive, non-native plant Phragmites in Delaware wetlands, the Delaware Landowner Incentive Program (LIP) turned to DU with a request to assist them with a project less than a half-mile from the open waters of the Delaware Bay. This project would increase high-quality foraging and loafing habitat for migrating waterfowl in the fall and early winter, as well as provide top-quality foraging habitat for endangered shorebirds such as the red knot during spring migration.
In spring 2007, DU will provide high-quality wetland seed to the landowner to ensure that the dietary needs of visiting birds will be met during the fall 2007 migration.
DU and Kent County Soil Conservation District Team Up for Successful Retrofit in Milford Neck Area. Using funds from a variety of sources, DU was able to help fund and oversee the construction of a water control structure upgrade near Thompsonville. This project has helped eliminate a rapid invasion of Phragmites, as well as provide great shallow water habitat for migrating ducks.
The continued success of the Initiative begins with groups like Fairplay, whose funding can be used to leverage additional public and private grants.
