Six-month budget extension puts appropriations efforts on hold

Appropriations budget planning for several key conservation programs may be put on hold soon as Congress works on finalizing a six-month extension (also known as a continuing resolution, or CR) after they reconvene in September. Once the CR is enacted, work will essentially cease on the regular appropriations bills that fund programs important to waterfowl including the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the Wetlands Reserve Program, among many, until at least the election in November.

When it becomes clear which party will control the House and Senate in 2013 and 2014, work can begin again to finish the spending plan that will fund the government for the second half of FY13. Annual funding for programs like NAWCA is expected to continue at its current level for the first half of the government's fiscal year.

Ducks Unlimited's governmental affairs staff will continue working with members of Congress to ensure continued funding for NAWCA and other priority programs for waterfowl.
