Sen. Roger Wicker is a supporter of many of Ducks Unlimited’s public policy priorities, including the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.

DU: What does outdoor recreation mean to the state of Mississippi?

Sen. Wicker: Outdoor recreation is a way of life for most Mississippians and generates a huge economic impact in our state. Mississippi offers a wide array of hunting, fishing, camping and watersports opportunities. Visitors travel to Mississippi from across the nation in pursuit of whitetail deer, waterfowl and world-class freshwater and saltwater fishing.

DU: Thank you for being a co-sponsor of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA). Can you explain why it’s important to maintain funding for wetlands conservation?

Sen. Wicker: NAWCA provides critical funding for the preservation, restoration and enhancement of our nation’s wetlands. Over the last 20 years, this program has funded more than 1,600 projects and protected more than 20 million acres of natural migratory bird habitats.

DU: You are also the lead sponsor a bill to permanently authorize the e-duck stamp program. Tell us why you want to pass this bill?

Sen. Wicker: Those who enjoy duck hunting are legally required to purchase a federal duck stamp from local post offices or sporting goods stores. My legislation would expand a pilot program, currently active in eight states, to allow hunters to purchase these stamps online, saving time and taxpayer dollars. Not only does this bill help hunters, but 98 cents of every dollar generated by the sales of the stamps goes toward wetlands conservation.

DU: What do your constituents need to know about your priorities for sportsmen and women?

Sen. Wicker: One of my top priorities, since being elected to Congress, has been the protection of our Second Amendment rights. I also have supported numerous conservation efforts, including those in the recently passed farm bill, to ensure future generations of Mississippians have continued access to our nation’s great outdoors.
