U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham was honored by a coalition of conservation groups with the 2012 Conservation Excellence Award in September, honoring his role in protecting thousands of acres of critical wildlife habitat over the past two decades.

"No elected official has done more for conservation than Senator Graham," said Alvin Taylor, director of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "The citizens of South Carolina will be thanking him hundreds of years from now because of his efforts to promote habitat protection and provide outdoor recreation opportunities."

The award praises Graham for his strong support of hunting and fishing, for his habitat protection efforts statewide and for his bipartisan support of key programs such as the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA). The resolution that awarded the honor to Graham was signed by officials from DNR, Ducks Unlimited, The Conservation Fund, National Wild Turkey Federation, The Nature Conservancy, Upstate Forever and the S.C. Wildlife Federation.

Approximately 100 people attended the event, including DU Regional Vice President Bill Short, who signed the resolution recognizing Graham on behalf of DU, and Director of Conservation Programs Craig LeSchack.

"Ducks Unlimited is very appreciative of Senator Graham's continued support of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which have enabled the protection of critical wildlife habitat across the state," LeSchack said.
