Since the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA)
reauthorization bill (H.R. 2208) was introduced in May, five more representatives have joined the original co-sponsors to support it.
Reps. John Dingell (MI), Steve King (IA), Bennie Thompson (MS) and Rob Wittman (VA) introduced the bill in an effort to reauthorize the public-private partnerships funded by NAWCA. Joining them in support are Reps. Charles Boustany (LA), David Joyce (OH), Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA), Mike Thompson (CA) and Don Young (AK). The bill is a straight reauthorization of NAWCA’s $75 million funding through Fiscal Year 2017.
“Louisiana continues to lose its wetlands at an alarming rate,” Boustany said. “It is currently estimated that an area the size of a football field of wetlands is lost every hour in The Pelican State. This legislation seeks to prevent these losses by restoring wildlife capacity, creating habitats and increasing air and water quality in and near wetlands.
“NAWCA has been successful in restoring wetlands across North America since its inception. Almost 27 million acres of wetlands conservation has been a direct result of the partnership between the federal government and private citizens. This partnership has also led to the creation of almost 7,500 jobs annually. With Louisiana’s wetlands representing about 40 percent of the wetlands of the continental United States and about 80 percent of wetland losses, this legislation benefits Louisiana’s Third Congressional District, the state and the nation, and I am proud to support it.”
NAWCA conserves North America’s waterfowl, fish and other wildlife resources while producing a variety of environmental and economic benefits. Every federal dollar provided by NAWCA must be matched by at least one dollar from non-federal sources.
Because the program is so effective, NAWCA funds are usually tripled or quadrupled. Since NAWCA’s inception, more than 4,500 partners have been involved in more than 2,200 conservation projects across North America.
