Ducks Unlimited staff in the Great Lakes/Atlantic Region took advantage of Congress’ August recess and gave a staffer of Rep. Dan Kildee (MI) a tour of Michigan restoration projects.

Jordan Dickinson joined DU staff members Gildo Tori, Dane Cramer and Emily Marx for a tour of Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) and North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA) projects within Kildee’s district. The group made visits to Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, Crow Island State Game Area, Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area and Saganing Nature Preserve. Each tour involved presentations from various partners, including staff from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, The Conservation Fund and Saginaw Bay Land Conservancy.

DU staff and partners stressed the importance of the GLRI and NAWCA funds that are leveraged and matched for on-the-ground conservation projects in the state. These programs sustain wetlands, waterfowl and wildlife, as well as numerous jobs and local economies that depend on hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation opportunities. The tour also showcased the detrimental nature of invasive phragmites and the ways in which wetlands can be managed to maximize and sustain the productivity of these areas.

The tour provided an excellent opportunity for DU and its partners to demonstrate the tremendous value of on-the-ground conservation projects that provide numerous benefits for Great Lakes waterfowl, wildlife and people.
