Ducks Unlimited CEO Dale Hall and First Vice President George Dunklin Jr. sit on the steering committee for The Big River Works, a forum for discussions among varied stakeholder groups to highlight the Mississippi River's national significance, along with all the efforts dedicated to its preservation. One of the primary goals of The Big River Works is to move toward an Accord for Cooperation for the Mississippi River System by engaging a strong coalition of environmental, economic and cultural interests with a common stake in ensuring a healthy, working Mississippi River watershed. As the former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and now as CEO of Ducks Unlimited, Hall's experience utilizing partnerships to achieve desired outcomes will be a great asset to The Big River Works.

The first of five leadership forums scheduled in major cities along the river was held in New Orleans, La., on May 31. As this meeting overlapped DU's 75th Anniversary National Convention in Nashville, Tenn., Hall sent a pre-recorded video message about the river's importance to migratory waterfowl and people in many walks of life. DU Director of Conservation Programs Jerry Holden attended the meeting on behalf of DU and waterfowl interests. The focus of the meeting in New Orleans was to connect various stakeholder groups by identifying common purposes and shared goals.

"DU has long operated as a consensus-building partner with a diversity of groups that all desire improved habitat for wildlife and sustainable natural resources for future generations," Holden said. "DU's prominent role with The Big River Works will ensure that the ducks have a voice in the future management of the Mississippi River."
