Ducks Unlimited members gathered in Washington, D.C., last week to honor Rep. John Dingell (MI), the longest-serving member of Congress. During his nearly 60 years in office, Dingell has been an avid champion of conservation.

“Congressman Dingell’s lifelong commitment to conservation and our hunting heritage has affected and benefitted sportsmen and women throughout the United States,” said Gildo Tori, DU’s Director of Public Policy in Great Lakes/Atlantic Region. “His legacy of working on the Migratory Bird Conservation Committee and sponsoring legislation such as the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, North American Wetlands Conservation Act and others has ensured wild places for wildlife and people lasting well into our future.”

Included in his many achievements in conservation, the congressman has served on the Migratory Bird Conservation Committee (MBCC) since 1969. The MBCC approves conservation and restoration projects that use funds from federal duck stamp sales and North American Wetlands Conservation Act grants. He was also the driving force behind the first international wildlife refuge, the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.
