Bill D’Alonzo has been a Ducks Unlimited volunteer for more than 20 years. He was the 2012 Budweiser Conservationist of the Year, and is the new chairman of the DU Conservation Programs Committee (CPC). Watch the full interview on the DU YouTube Channel.

DU: Tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved as a Ducks Unlimited volunteer.

Bill: I think I became a DU member when I was about 13 or 14 years old because I liked the magazine. When I learned more about the mission of DU, I enjoyed supporting it. Over the years, as I have grown older and have had more resources at my disposal, my DU activity and commitment have grown. I joined a DU committee when I was just out of college. I joined the WAT board in 2007 or 2008, and got involved with DU on the Investment and Finance committees. John Newman asked me to chair the Business Planning Committee when he was president. George Dunklin, the current president, asked me to chair the CPC. I enjoy serving on the WAT board and DU board a great deal.

DU: As the new CPC chairman, what do you want people to know about the committee?

Bill: It’s the largest committee DU has. At the risk of offending some other committee chairs, I think it’s also one of the most important. It’s definitely our core mission to conserve and protect wetlands and waterfowl habitat, but there are so many other ancillary benefits: hydrology, benefits to other species of wildlife and more. I’m new to the committee, so I’m still learning a lot myself. We had our first meeting back in August in Annapolis; we accomplished a lot and I’m looking forward to doing more with the group.
