EAST LANSING, Mich. – Feb. 7, 2014 – Earlier today President Obama signed the 2014 Farm Bill, ending years of legislative uncertainty for farmers and conservationists alike.

"This farm bill truly is a bipartisan solution," said DU CEO Dale Hall. "It includes proactive and commonsense conservation programs that will help deter wetland and other habitat loss, incentivize habitat conservation and keep working farmers and ranchers on their land."

Highlights in the bill include recoupling of conservation compliance practices to eligibility for crop insurance and a Sodsaver program that will impact states in the Prairie Pothole Region.

Gildo Tori, DU’s director of public policy in the Great Lakes and Atlantic Region, attended the signing in East Lansing, Mich.

"Witnessing the signing at Michigan State University was very gratifying," Tori said. "Michigan State was the nation’s first land grant university, offers dynamic programs in conservation and agriculture, and is the alma mater of Senator Debbie Stabenow, who chairs the Senate Agricultural Committee, and whose leadership was essential to completion of this legislation. Her guidance, along with the other principal negotiators and congressional leadership, set the stage for today’s signing."
