In October 1991, inspired by the conservation efforts of Ducks Unlimited Canada and recognizing the need for wetlands conservation in Australia, a group of concerned citizens formed Ducks Unlimited Australia. The name was changed to Wetland Care Australia in 1996 but the mission remained the same: to restore, create, conserve, and manage Australia's wetland habitats and dependent species.

To assist with achieving these goals, Wetland Care Australia partners with government agencies, corporations, and private landowners. In addition, Wetland Care Australia promotes and conducts research on wetland-related topics.

Completed Projects:

  • Banrock wetland- Enhanced 350 hectares of floodplain along the River Murray.
  • Tolderol wetland- Rehabilitated migratory wader (shorebird) habitat along Lake Alexandrina.
  • Loveday wetland- Constructed culverts, regulators, and fish screens to control the European carp population and to restore the natural hydrology of the wetland.

Wetland Care Australia is a community-based, not-for-profit organization, headed by 16 voluntary board members. They publish a quarterly newsletter for members, Wetlands Alive, which reports on the conservation activities of Wetland Care Australia and related wetland issues.
