Ducks Unlimited's Agronomy Program
Winter Cereals: Sustainability in Action is a joint research and education initiative of Ducks Unlimited and Bayer CropScience focused in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.
The project includes:
- Development of new winter wheat varieties with regional universities
- Winter wheat production research
- Agronomic assistance for producers
• Technical assistance
• Research/demonstration plots and field tours
• Educational materials and presentations
- Research on waterfowl nesting success in winter wheat
The Winter Cereals: Sustainability in Action initiative promotes a stewardship model of improving agricultural productivity while maintaining habitat for wildlife. Winter wheat can be beneficial to a producer's operation by increasing profitability while spreading out workload for labor and equipment. The fall-planted crop also provides safe cover for nesting waterfowl.
DU promotes winter cereals because of the minimal field disturbance they bring in the spring of the year, which improves nesting success. Research in Canada shows that duck nest success improves by 35 times with fall-planted winter cereals when compared to spring planted cereals.
