Mad Island WMA
Brant Lake and Big Muddy Lake

Purpose: This project will involve the aerial application of herbicides (Rodeo) to noxious stands of cattail within and around the perimeter of both Brant Lake and Big Muddy Lake on Mad Island WMA. Approximately 350 acres of cattail vegetation will be sprayed with herbicides to control further encroachment and help re-establish productive freshwater submerged plant communities. Enhancement efforts should increase the amount of submerged aquatics and promote the expansion of coontail, longleaf pondweed, and water milfoil, all highly sought after waterfowl foods. This project is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to maintain high quality wetland habitat for wintering waterfowl, while providing additional duck hunting opportunities.

Location: Approx. 25 miles southwest of Bay City, TX (Matagorda County)

Acres Impacted: 350 acres

Habitat Type: Freshwater Marsh
Submerged Aquatic Vegetation

Partners: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Ducks Unlimited, Inc

Timeline: Herbicide was applied in fall 2001and 2002
