Ducks Unlimited, Axalta partner in Delaware Bay

Ducks Unlimited and Axalta Coating Systems are continuing their multi-year conservation partnership by improving wetland habitat throughout Delaware Bay

Representatives from DU, Axalta and numerous conservation organizations gathered Oct. 12 to celebrate Delaware Bay conservation.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Oct. 18, 2016 – Ducks Unlimited and Axalta Coating Systems are continuing their multi-year conservation partnership by improving wetland habitat throughout Delaware Bay, a region of significant importance to waterfowl, wildlife and millions of people.

Delaware Bay is lined with public wildlife recreation and refuge areas which are major destinations for weekend tourists and nature lovers. The bay’s freshwater and saltwater marshes provide critical staging and wintering habitat for waterfowl.

Axalta’s support already has benefitted wetland conservation projects in Texas, Michigan, Minnesota and Mexico. Additional support will help to fund Ducks Unlimited projects in Delaware Bay, an area of close proximity to Axalta’s global headquarters in Philadelphia.

The Axalta-Ducks Unlimited partnership is expected to benefit several projects, including:

  • Updating and enhancing several public use areas along the Delaware Bay coastline, including Augustine Wildlife Area, Little Creek Wildlife Area and Woodland Beach.
  • Permanently protecting 1,500 to 2,000 acres of coastal land in New Jersey.

The announcement was made at an event at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Smyrna, Del. Leaders from Ducks Unlimited and Axalta celebrated the plans with numerous conservation partners from the Delaware Bay region. Also taking part at the event were Axalta customers, including Case-New Holland.

"Our partnership with Axalta Coating Systems has amplified our ability to conserve wetlands, and the real beneficiaries are the people and wildlife here in Delaware Bay," said David Brakhage, Director of Conservation for Ducks Unlimited’s Great Lakes/Atlantic Region.

Ducks Unlimited and Axalta announced a five-year partnership in 2015. Axalta is a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings for vehicles and industrial applications in the United States and 130 countries around the world. Materials that are coated and protected with Axalta products are able to last longer and be more productive, a natural connection with Axalta’s commitment to protecting and conserving resources through its support of Ducks Unlimited.

"Partnerships and sustainability are essential to our business," said Mike Cash, President of Axalta’s Industrial Coatings business. "Axalta supports organizations like Ducks Unlimited, and projects designed to educate and empower stakeholders in our communities such as visitors to Bombay Hook and the state of Delaware. It is vital that we work together to continue to improve our natural resources."

Throughout its history, Ducks Unlimited has conserved thousands of acres in the Delaware Bay region, including several ongoing projects:

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge – Ducks Unlimited and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are enhancing more than 500 acres of emergent wetland habitat. Bombay Hook is known among birders as an international hot spot and is recognized as one of America’s 100 Important Bird Areas by the American Bird Conservancy.

Ted Harvey Conservation Area – Work started this summer on a 375-acre wetland at one of Delaware’s most productive public waterfowl venues. DU and the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife are collaborating on the project, which will extend the lifespan of this important coastal impoundment.

Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area – This 941-acre wetland enhancement project in southeast New Jersey is a partnership between New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited and Cape May County Department of Mosquito Control. The project will provide better water level management and reshape the wetland topography to increase plant growth and diversity. Construction should start in spring 2017.
