Ducks Unlimited's Agronomy Program
Agronomy program provides incentives and education on winter cereals
Ducks Unlimited's (DU) agronomy program provides incentives and education to encourage farmers to plant winter cereals.
DU promotes winter cereals because of the minimal field disturbance they bring in the spring of the year, which improves nesting success. Research in Canada shows that duck nest success improves by 35 times with fall-planted winter cereals when compared to spring planted cereals.
The South Dakota project areas include Brown, Day and Marshall counties. The project area in northwest North Dakota includes McLean, Mountrail and Ward counties. In southeast North Dakota, producers in Dickey, Ransom and Sargent counties may participate in the program.
