Joe Gabig Project Dedicated

On May 8th, 2009, Ducks Unlimited and partners celebrated the dedication of the Joe Gabig Marsh on the Kirkpatrick Basin South Wildlife Management Area. Joe Gabig was a long-time employee of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission who tragically passed away a few years ago. Joe spent a great deal of time in the Rainwater Basin and was a strong advocate for the restoration and protection of important waterfowl habitats in this area. The Joe Gabig Marsh is located on an 80-acre tract of land purchased by DU in 2006. Wetland habitat on the property will be restored in early 2009 with funding provided by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service, North American Wetlands Conservation Council, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Rainwater Basin Joint Venture, and DU. The project includes the installation of a levee and water control structure. A well on the site will be retrofitted to allow wetland managers to use the well as a supplemental source of water to manage wetland habitats on the site. DU will transfer the property to NGPC later in 2009 as an addition to the Kirkpatrick Basin South WMA.
