CALEDONIA STATE PRISON NAWCA PROJECT

DU recently completed work on the Caledonia State Prison project in Halifax County, NC. This project was also part of the Roanoke River Migratory Bird Initiative II NAWCA grant. The project involved construction of levees and installation of three water control structures to restore 77 acres of prior-converted agricultural fields to shallow water managed wetlands.

Waterfowl that will benefit from this project include pintails, mallards, American black ducks, lesser scaup, and one of the largest wintering flocks of Southern James Bay Canada geese in the Carolinas. In addition, the managed wetlands at Caledonia State Prison will also help support a population of 100,000 wintering tundra swans.

DU’s partners on this project included the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and the North Carolina Department of Corrections. The NCWRC entered a 30-year lease agreement with the Department of Corrections to manage the project to benefit waterfowl.
