How Does DU’s Carbon Credit Program work?
DU’s carbon program is for landowners who are interested in enrolling their native prairie or expired CRP in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (FWS) Grassland Easement program. Because FWS Grassland Easements prohibit the grassland from being plowed, the existing soil organic carbon will never be exposed to the atmosphere, and therefore will remain “sequestered”.
Ducks Unlimited will provide a substantial, one-time payment to landowners who wish to enroll their land in the FWS Grassland Easement program, and who are also interested in conveying the carbon rights under the eased acres to DU. The carbon payment is over and above the payment for the easement, is made through a separate agreement between the landowner and DU, and is not a part of the easement document.
