Barren River WMA
Calvert Springs Wetlands Tract

Purpose: To construct 1,200 feet of levees and install three water-control structures to create two wetland units with water management capabilities. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will manage the area for natural wetlands vegetation, seasonally flooded bottomland hardwoods and flooded agricultural crops to supplement natural wildlife foods. Restored wetlands will support migrating and wintering mallards, green-winged teal, northern shovelers and gadwall. The area is open for public recreation, including waterfowl hunting.



Location: Allen County, Kentucky

Acres Impacted: 45 acres

Habitat Type: Spring-fed emergent marsh along Barren River Lake.

Partners: Ducks Unlimited, Inc., Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Timeline: Project was completed August 2004 and dedicated March 2006.
