DU Acquires Levitt Property

In March 2009, Ducks Unlimited completed the purchase of the Levitt Property in Clay County, Nebraska. This property is located in the heart of the Rainwater Basin, some of the most important waterfowl migration habitat in the Central Flyway. The Levitt property is about seven miles southeast of DU’s impressive Verona Complex, a contiguous block of over 1,000 acres of prime wildlife habitat. The 160-acre Levitt tract contains important wetland habitat that will be protected and enhanced by Ducks Unlimited, providing valuable spring migration habitat to thousands of mallards, pintails, blue-winged teal and other species. The uplands will be restored to native prairie in coming years. DU acquired the property through the “Revolving Habitat Program”. After habitat restoration work is completed, DU will protect the property through a perpetual conservation easement and then sell the tract to a conservation buyer, using the proceeds from the sale to initiate another project in the Rainwater Basin. The $256,000 needed to purchase the Levitt tract was generously provided by Ducks Unlimited major donors.
