  Sackos Wetland Restoration Project

Ducks Unlimited has completed the restoration of 25 acres of wetland habitat and one mile of the Powder River on this site located about 10 miles north of Baker City, Oregon. The project included the construction of levees, installation of water control structures and restoration of three old meanders of the Powder River. Years ago, the river had been straightened and ditched, primarily in an effort to control flooding and convert the property for agricultural uses. The current landowner wanted to restore habitat for wildlife on the site and contacted DU. The completed project will provide excellent breeding habitat for waterfowl. The restored sections of the river will not only offer habitat for ducks, but fish, river otters, beaver and other wildlife species. Partners in this project included the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, North American Wetlands Conservation Council, and the landowner. The project was completed in December 2004.
