REGION – The Shenandoah Chapter of Ducks Unlimited sponsored its annual Youth Duck Hunt at Riverton Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, October 9. Boys and girls under the age of 15 were allowed to participate in a live duck hunt, as well as duck identification, duck cleaning, clay-pigeon shooting, and dog retrieval activities. Nearly 45 young hunters took part, along with 35 adult volunteers and parents. The day, organized by a committee of Ducks Unlimited members and led by Greg Stark and Eric Johnson, was to educate young adults about the sport of duck hunting."This was the most bonding time I've had with my dad in years," commented Essex eighth grader Brett Gay. "I just wish we had the whole weekend to hunt."The Iowa Department of Natural Resources sets aside a weekend that offers kids under the age of 15 a chance to hunt with a licensed adult. After gathering for an early morning hunt, the group gathered at the Riverton Look-Out Area to go through a duck-cleaning session. Prior to cleaning the ducks, John Ross of the Iowa DNR helped educate the kids how to identify the different breeds of ducks.

In all, the young hunters shot approximately 40-50 ducks, varying from Wood Ducks to Blue and Green Wing Teal to Widgeon. He also discussed different techniques for identifying the birds while in flight. During the duck cleaning activity, the kids were given the hands-on opportunity to experience the job of collecting the edible parts of the bird, along with the help of some of the more experienced adult hunters.

Following the duck cleaning, each young person was allowed the opportunity to try their chances shooting clay pigeons. DNR Officer Dale Anderson was present for the activities and helped the kids better their technique in a live shooting situation. Marcus Birt, and eighth grader from Essex, commented, "I had a lot of fun; I just wish we could have had more clay pigeons to shoot." The final activity of the day included George Shaw, owner of Stony Point Kennels in Shenandoah. Shaw provided much of his knowledge and expertise with the kids on training a hunting dog. A meal was also provided by Hy-Vee and Bank Iowa.
"It was very well put together, and the programs were interesting. The hunting grounds were great, and the supervisors were fun,” said Kyle Bangston.
"I was so happy when I killed my first duck,” added Chase Duckett. “I have been bugging my dad to go duck hunting again soon."
"I know what my future will be - a professional waterfowl hunter,” said Brett Gay.
