| Mike Checkett, looks over a gadwall nest on the Missouri Coteau, North Dakota. | Before joining Ducks Unlimited in August 2003, Mike Checkett worked for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) as the state waterfowl biologist and migratory game bird program coordinator from 2000 to 2003. While at AGFC, he coordinated all aspects of Arkansas waterfowl programs, including regulations, research, aerial surveys, banding operations and other data collection, analysis and research efforts, including the mallard satellite tracking program. He was the state’s representative to the Mississippi Flyway Council’s technical section, serving as its vice-chairman from 2001 to 2003 and represented Arkansas on the Mississippi Flyway Council in 2003.
Checkett earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees at the University of Missouri – Columbia. His master’s research was related to flooding regimes and nutritional values of natural waterfowl foods to migrating ducks. Prior to his masters, He worked as a research biologist for three years with the Missouri Department of Conservation, conducting research investigating local populations of giant Canada geese and mourning doves. Other research interests and highlights include sub-arctic nesting populations of snow geese and Canada geese on Akimiski Island, Nunavut, Canada (Ministry of Natural Resources Ontario), pintails on the Laguna Madre, Texas (Ducks Unlimited Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research and Texas A&M University, Kingsville), mid-continent mallard populations (AGFC satellite telemetry program) and Arkansas wood ducks and resident Canada geese (banding and population dynamics).
He is a decoy carver, layout boat builder, golfer and avid bird hunter, hunting across the United States and Canada with his former yellow Lab, Buck. For the past two seasons, he has shared his hunting adventures with his current yellow Lab, Elvis.
