Long Island Program
Vast suburban and urban development on Long Island, New York, has dramatically degraded and destroyed coastal wetlands of critical importance.
DU's Long Island program restores and enhances coastal wetlands on both private and public lands on Long Island.
This initiative will not only improve wildlife habitat but also improve water quality and the general quality of life for the people of the area.
Project and Partnership examples:
DU and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Suffolk County Vector Control Division signed a Long Island memorandum of Understanding. DU and its partners have set out to restore 10,000 acres of coastal wetland and sub-tidal habitats in the area over the next ten years.
Over 1,000 acres have already been restored.
