Wheeler NWR
White Springs Moist-Soil Units

Purpose: To restore 910 acres of moist-soil wetlands on Wheeler NWR through installation of six water control structures and construction of several interior and perimeter levees. This project established four new impoundments that have been managed for moist-soil vegetation and flooded agricultural crops. The addition of this project provides greater flexibility in managing water levels, thereby allowing managers to dewater or re-flood moist-soil units independently. This project will retain water in fall and winter, thus providing valuable foraging habitat to migrating and wintering waterfowl near the Tennessee River and will be managed by the USFWS.

Location: Approx. 2 miles northeast of Decatur, AL (Limestone County)

Acres Impacted: 910 acres

Habitat Type: Moist-soil Wetlands
Flooded Agricultural Crops

Partners: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Ducks Unlimited, Inc

Timeline: Construction was completed in summer 1993
