2005 ALABAMA CONSERVATION REPORT
Chris Cole, Director of Conservation Programs

The following is a brief summary of activities in Alabama by Conservation field staff from July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005. Should you have questions or comments concerning the information provided or would like to learn more about a particular activity please call me at the Southern Regional Office, (601) 956-1936.

Private land Efforts – Conservation staff continue to receive phone calls and e-mails from Alabama landowners who are interested in enhancing their property for waterfowl. Inquiries lead to at least two site visits to properties along the Sipsey River, outside Tuscaloosa.

Conservation staff were invited to attend and make a presentation at the annual conference of the Alabama DCNR, Wildlife Division. The focus of our presentation was on how DU’s Conservation staff (biologists and engineers) can support the state agency’s efforts in enhancing public and private wetlands.

Alabama State Convention – The Alabama State Convention was held March 4-6, 2005 at Tuscaloosa. Forrest Fitts and his team of highly-capable volunteers put on exemplary state event. The Saturday morning business session was well-attended. Several updates and presentations were given by senior-level volunteers and others, including John Tomke, DU President, and Stan Huner, Flyway Senior Vice President. Chad Manlove, SRO’s Manager of Conservation Planning, presented the always-insightful “Where were the Ducks?” power point presentation. State Chair Forrest Fitts recognized Greg Gregerson as the state’s chair-elect.

Barbour Wildlife Management Area – Engineering staff recently completed the field portion of an assessment aimed at determining development potential of several wet sites on Barbour Wildlife Management Area, near Eufaula. Findings have been sent to Wildlife Division staff for review and consideration.
